Putting the patient experience first through connections with nature

A successful hospital system that is centered around health and well-being begins at the patient-level, and Scott Kashman, chief administrative officer for Cape Coral Hospital, knows this firsthand. The hospital administrator came across Samueli Insitute's Optimal Healing Environments (OHE) framework about 10 years ago at a medical conference and began to think immediately about how the concept could impact his own hospital system. Within the last three years, his vision of employing the OHE framework in his hospital has become a reality and the results he has seen have shocked and amazed him.

Following a panel of experts on the Healthy Base Initiative, Dr. Berry’s comments provided insight into Samueli Institute’s ground-breaking research in the area of health and wellness.

Samueli Institute Spreads Wellness to Local Community
On June 7, Samueli Institute engaged the community members of Ward 8 in southeast Washington, D.C. during a farmers market and wellness event. The event culminated months of meetings with community leaders and served as a jumping off point to gage the interest and needs of the community in regards to health and wellness.

The Healthy Eating Halo Effect
America’s obesity crisis is well-documented, as well its impact on the overall health of the nation through an increase in hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke.  While many are engaged in important efforts to help alleviate the obesity epidemic by encouraging changes in public behavior and convincing Americans to eat better and exercise more, some colleagues and I decided to focus our efforts on a different population: doctors and other health care professionals.

Shaping Future Generations: Med Students Experience Mind-Body Therapies

On December 7, 2012 Samueli Institute offered a mind-body workshop for Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) medical students. Spearheaded by Dr. Eric Schoomaker, Former Army Surgeon General, this was the first mandatory educational module for USUHS students in complementary and integrative medicine (CIM).

Healing from TBI: Soldier takes holistic approach
After suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury in Iraq in 2009, Victor Medina says that although he will never be cured, he has been healed. A remarkable statement considering his injury left him with the typical long-term side effects of TBI: issues with cognitive and motor function including short attention span, memory loss and balance issues as well as physical and emotional difficulties such as headaches, tremors, mood swings, balance issues and low energy.
